Spotlight on the ‘Humans of GenV’

A sophisticated research project like GenV has a great many talented and passionate people working behind the scenes to create a stronger approach to child and parent health and wellbeing in Victoria.

In our ‘Humans of GenV’ spotlight series, we aim to share the stories of the people supporting this world-leading research project.

Meet Zainab Albadri
GenV team member at Northern Health’s Northern Hospital in Epping

I really admire GenV’s aim of involving every Victorian baby and family, regardless of their ethnicity, primary language and other factors that often form the exclusion criteria of many studies.

My parents are both from Iraq, but my siblings and I were all born in Australia. I am deeply fascinated by the differences in physical and mental health between second-generation children, such as my siblings and I, and third-generation children whose parents were born in Australia, but whose grandparents were born overseas.

I graduated Biomedicine with a major in Neuroscience from the University of Melbourne. I went on to do a year of Honours (research) in Public Health and subsequently began my Master of Public Health at the same university.

I am working in the GenV team at the Northern Hospital in Epping and I really admire GenV’s aim of involving every Victorian baby and family, regardless of their ethnicity, primary language and other factors that often form the exclusion criteria of many studies. I think that GenV’s results will become an asset in the improvement of the health and wellbeing of all Victorian babies as it will possess both internal and external validity.

I’m looking forward to giving women from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds the opportunity to contribute to medical research – something they rarely get the opportunity to contribute to. I’m also looking forward to learning more about the health issues that are common amongst the demographics we see at the Northern Hospital.
